I treated Jack, my 5 inch redcap for septicemia back in November. He got a move to a bigger tank and a couple weeks on medicated food. The red faded somewhat to pink, but it's getting redder again.

Water parameters are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5-10. I've been doing 2 50% water changes a week; nitrate hasn't been over 10 at any point since the move.

There are three fish in the 75 gallon tank; Jack at 5 inches, Foo is about 4 inches and Ilya is growing fast at 3 1/2 inches. Plenty of water movement, aeration and filtration. Temperature is 74-76 degrees.

Jack's tail seems to change sometimes pinker, sometimes paler. There is a small red clot in one lobe of the lower caudal fin, saturday it looked like there was a pimple at the center of the clot, today no sign of a bump. He's growing, very active and feeding well. The other fish are healthy as can be. No sign of shredding at the edges of the fins, just very visible veins and now the the red spot.

What course of action would be best?

1: Let it go, continue with water changes and wait/hope for it to clear up
or
2: medicate &/or medicated food to all three fish
or
or 3: isolate Jack in the 20 gallon QT and give him a course of antibiotic or medicated food?

While the latter makes the most sense, I might have more trouble keeping the nitrates under control in the tank he has now pretty much outgrown, but I don't want to unnessecarily medicate the others by treating the 75 gallon tank.

wednesday night, Jack's tale almost white, even the clot has faded again somewhat...

I wonder if he's just really sensitized to nitrates and a reading of 10 makes his veins turn redder?

It's a mystery, but at least for now, I won't medicate and simply keep up water testing and changes and see if I can spot a pattern.

i have this same problem with my little red cap, his tail always seems to have red veins showing, i dont remember a time when he didnt, though my water readings are always fine. i think its possibly due to the white colouration, making it show up more than on a coloured tail. the clot thing though i would be concerned about, as mine has never had that. good luck.
