A while ago I posted that we were trying to get some new fish for our tank. That didn't quite work out. Here is where things stand right now:

2 False ClownFish
1 Blue Linckia
3 Giant Turbo Snails
3 Nessarius Snails
7 Small Hermit Crabs

The water parameters are really stable. But we've been battling with a green/brown algae bloom that just won't seem to go away. We think that we have nitrate trapped in the substrate since I can't find any other source. (We've really increased our water flow, cut down our light cycles and have switched to pellet food with very little waste. -- anything else we've missed??)

We are also setting up a quarantine tank for any new arrivals.

Questions:

The LFS recommended a pile of small additional nessarius snails and more hermit crabs to clean and hopefully get rid of the algae problem. Good idea? How many is enough?

We were thinking of going for a small school of blue green chromis (like was suggested in another thread). Just want them and one or two other fish to finish off stocking the tank. What would be the maximum number of chromis to get and still leave room for one or two other small fish in our 55 gallon? How long do they stay in the Q tank?

I also want to make sure we don't get anything that will compete with the star for algal film. He won't eat clam bits and I don't want him to starve.

The LFS also recommended a sand sifting star. But I thought that our 55 gallon tank is too small for one? Especially with the Blue Linckia already?

Anything else I'm missing?

Thanks for all your help!!!!!!

OK, we got a dozen of the tiny nessarius snails tonight. It looks like a few of them have yellow worms in addition to their normal 'snout'. Can this cause problems? Just hitchhikers, or what? For now, they're the only thing in our new quarantine tank, but I don't want to add them to the main tank until I know if the worms are a problem.

Thanks!
