If you're looking for canisters, I hear the 501 turtle canister filter is great. A few people on here had Tom's, but the black tubing isn't smooth inside and can collect gunk, and it didn't work terribly well, if I remember. I'd go with the 501 if I wanted a canister.

The 501 is great, although it's not submersible (I have mine sitting next to teh tank....If the tank is going to be small, you might want to try the smaller Zoomed 318 filter, it can be submerged and will create less current in a smaller tank.
