How many tetras would I be able to have?? Hubby really wants tetras - anything else that could go with them? What do tetras eat?? I know they like the water warm. Do they use salt in the tank??? Any help would be great~! Thankyou.

It depends on the size of the tetras. For a 20g, I would get about 10-12 "typical" tetras that are about 1.25"-1.5", like neons, cardinals, glowlights, lemons, or serpaes, etc. Then I would round off your stocking levels with 4 or 5 corydoras. If you are thinking about some of the larger type of tetras, like bleeding hearts, or emperors, that are typically 2"-3", you should go with a smaller school of 6 or 7, plus 4 cories.

Tetras:

Food - Omnivorous (typical tetras) Flake, any dried or fresh small foods like bloodworms, tubifex etc. are normal, will pick at vegetables, lettuce, plants.

Salt - NO

Stocking - Rometiklan's got it

Water - No warmer than usual freshwater parameters...76 - 82 (Differs for species to species)

Tetras are very colorful and cool fish, and most are easy and good for a beginner. Start with something easy like neons, lemons, serpaes, buenos aires, or silver tips. They dont require any special care, and can thrive in the standard well cared for community aquarium. They go along with just about any other peaceful fish, and are therefore very compatable.

I would probably go with neons and glolights. Can you put the two types together? Will they school if they are a different type??

Its said 10 -12 rounded off with some corys? Could I just add a couple of extra tetras in there instead? Or is it beneficial to have cories in there because I hear ALOT of people say they have corys in their tetra tank.

Corys will eat the food that falls to the bottom of the tank which would probobly otherwise just rot.....plus they add some nice activity to the bottom of your tank. Keep in mind they like a smooth substrate preferably sand, but fine gravel will be ok too.

You can mix and match any kind of Tetras and they will be peaceful with each other but they will not school together. For a 20 gallon you can get two small different schools.

after the tetras find out that the food falls to the bottom, they'll pick most of it off, mine do. also, i didnt see anyone suggest rummynose tetras, i like them a lot and for the most part they school in a pretty tight formation, but if your only going to have tetras in your tank, they might not since they have no purpose to school, imo

I didn't suggest rummynose tetras because they are a little harder to maintain than the other types of tetra. they require super clean water and tighter water paramenters, temp, etc, and I figured there are other fish that are just as beautiful but easier to keep.

I'd like to mention one VERY IMPORANT THING - if you get cories pls don't keep them only to clean up the bottom - yes they will do this fine but you need to provide them will a stable diet as well! Make sure to get a sinking food to drop in for them - otherwise the poor little buggers will starve waiting for the scraps! Also never keep less than 3 of them

you have to feed them sinking foods tho!

If you're not really interested in cories per se and only want a scavenger, I'd bet that amano shrimp are more efficient. They also pick algae off plants and decorations. They get sold under the name algae-eating shrimp.
