i really would like alot of colorful fish for this tank i was thinking sometihing like african cichlids but im pretty sure they will outgrow the tank does anyone have anyideas

dwarf gourami are fun and wont outgrow your tank, they are a type of chichlids S.American I think I was told..

I think all gouramies are anabantids, not cichlids.

however, a couple of dwarf gouramies can do well. You could also add 3 corys to fill the bottom parts. Remember that an hex tank can hold less fish than a rectangular tank of the same volume, bacause of the reduced surface area and swimming space.

possible, I dont know what to think they are now. labrinth or chchlids or antibands. I have no Idea.. but yeah they are personable fish

Gouramis are anabantids, also known as labyrinth fish. They are not cichlids, and are Asian fish not South American.

I wouldn't recommend keeping more than one dwarf gourami in a 20 galllon tank, especially a hex. It could work, but they also may fight.

Anabantid anb labyrinth fish are the same. Theyare called like that because of an hole-like organ it their heads that get filled with atmospheric air and then oxigen is absorved by capillar veselss. That's why you see all gouramies going to the water surface and taking gulps of air no matter how well oxigenated your tank water is.

About the fighting issue, i believe you could avoid agression if you can put a true pair (male+fem). Too bad females are almost never carried by fish stores.

Another choice for your hex tank could be a solo betta. They are colorful and will make a great looking tank, specially if you plant it with living of silk plants.

One larger gourami (opaline, blue, pearl ??), 3 smaller corys OR 2 kuhlii loach, 3 mid sized tetras or rasporas...and LOTS of Tall plants in the back half area and a nice thin taller piece of driftwood...that doesn't take up too much floor room. For plants go with low light plants...then you won't have to worry too much about lighting and all that. (Java fern, java moss, anubias, most cryptocyrenes, water sprite)

Have a good substrate for plants...onyx sand or echo-complete for planted aquarium or a mix of both. They're both a black colored substrate if you prefer that. Or flourite or flora base for a brownish color substrate.

I have a 20 hex sitting around myself that I'm pondering what to do with...this here is just one of the ideas I had thought I might try with it.
