So the 30 gallon used tank that I went to go get turns out to actually be a 28 gallon bowfront. Not a bad thing though since my mom likes the design. Anyways, I've placed the Kissing Gourami that came with the tank into the loving hands of a LFS in the area that's been keeping fish for over 30 years. They gave me a seven dollar store credit, and I got paid today so my mom and I looked at some of their fish. Automatically my mom went for impossible fish, so I had to set her straight. "No, a Red Tail Shark will get too big for the tank." It's been 30 years since my mom keep fish, so I guess her confusion makes sense. Well after much debate, she decided upon a gorgeous female betta (rich blue with a black and light blue stripe on her side) and six Cherry Barbs.

So my question is, what else could go into the tank? It's planted with both fake and live plants, so there's cover. The female betta seems to be very peaceful, and the barbs do as well. I was thinking about maybe hitting PetSmart up on their one dollar sale, but the only species I liked were the Glowlight Tetras, and the employee told me that they couldn't co-exist peacefully with the other fish in the tank. Any suggestions are welcome.

So small tetras will be okay? What about Gold Barbs? Any type of cory you suggest?

Currently I have albino corys and they've got good character. As for barbs I only own cherry barbs and they get along well with my school of green and cardinal tetras.

I was looking at some albino corys today, and yeah, they seem to have good character. Anyone else have suggestions?

How many cherry barbs should I add? The tank is completely cycled and has been running for a year prior to my ownership of it. (I moved the tank with some of the water still in it covering the gravel, etc. The tank wasn't taken down when I bought it, and I had to take it down so I made sure to keep everything wet. So yeah, it's cycled.)

So we've decided on the final stock of the tank. Here it goes:

10 Cherry Barbs (5 males, 5 females)
6 Peppered Corys
1 Female Betta

I know that the Cherry Barb male to female ratio is off, but I'd be overstocking my tank if I put more in.

So how does this stocking sound?

I'd honestly go with 3males 6 female cherry barbs. But that's up to you. I've seen them fight with a 1:1 ratio. And you better find a stunning female betta to try and take away some of the beauty from the cherrys.

I would, but I already have five males and one female. That's all the store had at the time. I'd be overstocking if I had two females per male.

The betta we bought is a bright blue, and she has stripes down her sides.
