I have a 90 gallon (standard 4') that I got a good deal on. I've never had a tank this large before, so I'm trying to choose a direction to go with it. I've only kept smaller community fish before, so I figured this would be a great excuse to go for some larger fish with a bit more personality.

What are some good options for New World cichlids (and tankmates) that get to a decent size? I'm thinking 4" at least.

Discus or Angelfish aren't the direction I'd like to go either.

Thanks for any ideas!

a pair of Oscars would do well in there, or any pair of larger SA/CA Cichlids you could want. JDs, Red Devils, Texas Cichlids, and Midas cichlids are other options.

I've seen some amazing cichlid tanks and some strains get to a nice size or large, although I have no experience on the pros and cons hopefully others will chime in. Larger groups of smaller size fish give the illusion of a larger tank if you change your mind.

Certainly not all of these together. But a list of good options. You would have to mix and match appropriately.

Jack Dempsey
Salvini
Severums
Convicts
Green Terror
Loisellei
Oscar
Fire Mouth
...

the list goes on. Some are best alone, some are good with a couple different tankmates.

Here are some SA cichlids I'd add:
Earth Eaters (like Geopahgus sp. "Orange Head Tapajos"
Severums
Guianacara spp.
Aequidens spp.
Cichlasoma spp.

After doing a bit of research, I think I might go with Geophagus (I do like the Orange Head Tapajos).

I read they do better in groups than pairs, so how many could I keep in the 90? And would any tankmates be possible, or would I be better off keeping it a species tank?

They do better in groups, like I'd get 6. For geos I'd stick to one of the smaller growing species like Orange Heads or pindare. They are relatively peaceful so make sure tank mates aren't bullies.

Also have sand for substrate. They are sand sifters and if you dont add sand you lose part of their personality.
