Stocking a 90 Gallon

When setting up a tank I like to go kinda small for the simple reason that it makes everything else look larger in perspective. There are many cichlids that would work well in a tank that size; being the focal point but not taking away from your options in the future. A pair of Severums would make a nice centerpiece while still allowing you to keep Rams or Apistos.
There is a vast list of suitably sized cichlids for a 90; it really depends on what you want in the tank. Multiple species? Single species? Plants? You're blessed with water that will support a thriving planted tank. I'd recommend you look into the profiles for south american cichlids at cichlid forum and pick the fish you MUST have. Then plan your stock around that species: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/results.php

Yeah, I just read up on the Altifrons, and they're beautiful, but they'll get too large.

Hahaha, well...the water parameters are a mixed blessing. I was originally thinking about keeping Africans, but decided I don't feel like having to mess with my water chemistry that much.

You gotten some great advice in this thread bud. ;) I keep Geophagus sp. 'Tapajos' orange heads and they are wonderful fish with personality that gets better the more you have. Like Abarilot suggested and you've researched, Altifrons get too large for your tank. Have you considered a school of rummynose tetras? They are not region specific but look great together IMO. I have been wanting to add a school to my OH group of 9 along with Sterbai Corydoras.

I have gotten some great advice, and I really appreciate it!

Rummynose might be really nice. I might consider two schools, maybe Rummynose and some Lemon Tetras along with the Geos. Sterbais are another good option I didn't think about.

AfroCichlid - thanks for additional advice, there are so many options it's almost hard to narrow it down - too many things look good!

I'm pretty certain I'll go with 4 or 5 OH Geos and a school of tetras. I really liked the look of the Geos when I was researching.

That being said, your suggestion of a pair of Severums as centrepiece and some other dwarf cichlids is really tempting.

I think I'll need another tank. :grinyes:

Can I advise against the severums please, especially for a 90g? (I keep 7 severums) If you get the geos, stick to one school of tetras. Lemons are a broken school IMO. rummynose stick together and stay smaller. One piece of advise, if you decide to go with the geos, buy alot more than you plan to keep IF you buy juvies. Then you get to pick out which adults you want keep long term. It's easy to find juvies and thin back but significantly harder to find similar sized, accuratly ID'ed adults if decide you want more down the road. :grinno:

Your advice is duly noted and appreciated!

I agree with getting more juvies cuz then you can get a correct sex ratio, thus reducing some aggression in the tank. Can't wait to see what you decide on getting!

my bad on the altis... Everytime I hear someone may be getting geos my brain wants them to get altis lol. All geos are beautiful though. Balzanis are rad too.
