Stocking Guide

I have been hearing the one inch per gallon rule for as long as I can remember. I have always thought of it as a starting point.
I have only one excuse for placing this thread in the Aquatic Plant forum and that is that I was thinking about my planted 400 when I wrote it. Which brings up another factor to consider - the effects of dense planting on aggression, territories, hiding places and oxygen supply and other parameters related to water quality.

as you can see, decor also plays a part in stocking. a tank with plants can support more because plants absorb nitrates and other pollutants (not an excuse to skimp out on water chagnes though :D).

Unless you read Diana Walstad. Diana does a 50% water change on her aquariums once every 6 months whether they need it or not! Her explanations are thorough and appear to be backed by good science. And her aquariums, while not Amano type beautiful, have healthy plants and fish. She also encourages ample feeding, at least in part to help fertilize the plants. For every rule in this hobby there is an exception! For every approach there is an alternative. Pardon me jm1212 but I just love to play devil's advocate - no disrespect intended.

LOL...I just got that book for Xmas! I still need to crack it open though! Very well reviewed book....I gotta make the time and get to that book!

I am still hoping to find a book which is as informative, inclusive and scientific on the hi-tech approach to planted aquariums.

What about one of Takashi Amano's books? "Aquarium Plant Paradise" is well reviewed. here is his ADA site....

Happy hunting!

I couldn't find "Aquarium Plant Paradise" advertised on the ADA site (quite possibly my failure) but I did find it on Amazon.com. However, they do not have it in stock and do not list a price. And it is only 64 pages. The excerpts I read sounded like typical Amano - artsy and descriptive without much science or technical advise. Not that that is bad. I thoroughly enjoy looking through my copies of "Nature Aquarium World" books one and three(does book two exist?) but their value is primarily to serve as assistance in developing the artistic layout of a planted aquarium, not in understanding the science or equipment necessary for a successful hi-tech planted aquarium.

A lil' more googlin led me to this title - Optimum Aquarium By Kaspar Horst and Horst E. Kipper - looks like its the high tech bible but out of print...Amazon has used for $75 to $89.....

Thanks Fish Boy. I heard about "The Optimum Aquarium" at Aquarium Adventure in Columbus, found someone who had a copy and he has told me that he is going to make a copy for me. If this whole copy thing is not illegal, I'll be able to save the $80.00! But it is 20 years old. Apparently it was "the bible" when it first came out. I hope it isn't too dated.
