I think a M & F pair of apistogramma or rams would be interesting...but you won't likely see more than a very few fry unless you have another tank to raise them in. I'd prefer apistos as the male & females are very differently colored & their behaviors are fun.

I just feel as tho they would be to small for a species only tank in thinking about maybe getting 6 tiger barbs and leaving them in there by themselves

Not a super good choice for a 20 long, they get close to 3 inches as adults & can be aggressive without enough room. There are smaller similar barbs that might work better, 8 banded, 6 banded or even 5 banded. I have kept none of those yet but less aggressive than tiger barbs. Smaller rasboras or white clouds are good too, I have kept those at different times.
