I have a 90 gallon cycled tank that will soon be the home of 3 small angels and 1 pleco. I am looking for ideas on compatible tank mates for them. Maybe a school (9-10) of brightly coloured smallish (1-2”) fish would work? Or more angels? Or some kind of centrepiece fish? Also this move leaves my 15 tall empty. For it, I like the idea of tiger barbs and cories but with the tigers being fin nippers I’m not sure if it would fly. What about an algae eater for the 15?

Those angels will soon become nice and big and will be the center piece of the tank. If it were me I would add a school of peaceful fish to the tank. You want some of the larger tetras as angels are known to pick off smaller ones like neons. Stay clear of fin nippers like serpae but perhaps a large school of emporers, or lemon, or silver tips would be a good choice. In that size tank you could easily add in a nice school of 20 that would look great and provide lots of movement.

As for the 15 tall. Tiger barbs will work but will be a large stocking load once you get 5-6 adults in their. You don't have to have an algae eater but if you really desire one then ottos at the best choice or a smaller pleco like the bristlenose. Otherwise think about some of the smaller loaches like Zebras or YoYos or Khulie. A small school would look great and they are good at hiding to gte away from annoying tiger barbs.

One thing I dont want is a heavy bio load on any of the tanks. I'd much rather have a few healthy fish in an easy to clean tank then an over stocked tank that needs to be cleaned twice a week. I'm thinkin' this means tiger barbs for the 15 is out. I do like the idea of algae eaters help with the maintenance so otto's or a bristlenose sound good for the 15. Would otto's or 1 otto work in a 5.5 gallon with a male betta? Are otto's shoaling fish?

As for your 15 - I kept 5 tigers and 4 cories in a 10 with no probs. Just be sure to have caves or other places for the cories to hide

I have a book that suggests this stocking scheme for angelfish. His stocking schemes are not too much for the tank. This is what he suggests for a 50 gallon tank:
4 angelfish
5 swordtails, more females than males, red velvet in color to complement your angels
8 cories

or:

7 angelfish
5 cories

remember, this is a stocking scheme for a 50 gal tank, so you could almost double those numbers & still not have to heavy a bio load for your tank

Ouch 7 angels in a 50 gallon sounds crazy to me. Anyway you could keep an otto in a 5 gallon with a betta. Technically a shoaling fish but also really good at their job. Perhaps 2 would be a good idea but make sure to supliment with algae tabs as they will quickly deplete all the algae. I assuem these are planted tanks. Otherwise I would not suggest getting them. Also most plecos need some driftwood in their diet, plus veggies like zucchini.

6-7 tiger barbs and perhaps a few ottos would be a fine stocking level for aplanted 15 gallon. Tall tanks aren't great for cories as they love to surface quite often.

It's in "The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums" by David E. Boruchowitz.
7 angelfish & 5 cories in a 50 gal & he says it's not overstocked.

Well maybe not when they are small but 7 angel fish get big. I just know that I would never dream of keeping that many of those guys together, epsecially if they started to breed, look out!!!
