I've been thinking about adding some more colorful rainbows in with the rest of mine. Right now I have 10 Australians which are fairly bland. Let me know how it works out for you.
In my experience, Rainbows of one species don't "school"...more like hang out together.
Personaly, I like mixing different varietys, as I like the mix of different colors in tank. I've never had a problem having two or three of some species.
I would pick what you like, the Rainbows will be fine.
Here's the link to the thread with a vid of my tank:

How large are your Boesemani and Turqouise rainbows? I thought they stayed around 3-4" but yours look larger. That's the only reason I haven't picked some up yet.

My large Boesemani and Turquoise are each about 4.5”. I’ve seen some sites say the max size is 3”. I can tell you they can get bigger than that.
However, they are slow growers, especially the Boesemani. It will take well over a year to get to full size. Those two fish are about 7 years old.
Now the Red Iranians mentioned above, they are much faster growers, and from my experience will be one of the largest Rainbows. They not only get longer but taller than any others. I had some that were about 5.5”long and very tall.
For red Rainbows, I prefer the Millenium. They stay a bit smaller and I feel they have better color.
In general, any of the Trifasiata’s (Goyder River,Axelrodi, Running Creek) are all much, much faster growers, and can easily getup to 5”.
Hope that helps.
Yes, as far as Rainbow fish go, the Iranian's are the largest I have kept. I traded in some large (5.5") ones just a few months ago. When they got about 4" long, they really started getting taller.
Like I said, the Millenium (Glossolepis Pseudoincisus) only gets to about 4" or so, and is not nearly as tall with a more slender shape. Having had both, I think the Red color is brighter and more consistent on the Millenium.
Two of my Australian males are around 4" and they are starting to get fairly tall. What is the max size for these? I've read 4" - 8"...
