I posted a while back about my mom's restaurant fishtank woes (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196029) and this is a continuation. Long story short, she's trying to make things work for all of her fish (part attachment, part lack of convenient way to rehome them-over 2 hours from any store that will take them and the restaurant just opened so there's no time for the trip in the forseeable future)...the S.A. cichlids are keeping the 135 behind the bar, and we're setting up a new tank in the back dining area for the Africans. Big issue is lack of space...she has exactly 3' of wallspace she can dedicate to this and I've read that mbuna do way better with 4'...so we're trying to do the best we can. I picked up an awesomely cheap, clean, complete 46 gallon bowfront setup from craigslist and drove it down. I have access to as much free slate and lava rock as I feel like picking up off the ground, so creating caves/territories will be easy...it's the stocking that has me concerned in such tight quarters.

We're starting off with the two she currently has, identified in the original thread as an OB zebra (Metriaclima estherae(OB)) and a yellow lab (Labidochromis Caeruleus). From what I've been reading (and seeing in her tank already) is the lab is a pretty mellow fsh, and the zebra (Mom calls him "Hatchet-head") is a bully, and it would really be better for us if she hadn't picked him up....but she did. We talked about buying 4-5 more labs and 4-5 more zebras, but I think the labs would get wooped on. So I'm thinking/hoping if we get 4-5 more labs and 5-6 of a compatible, relatively peaceful mbuna, and just keep the zebra as the oddman out his terrorizing will be kept to a minimum/disbursed enough to not be an issue...so 10-12 relatively non-aggressive fish plus Hatchet-head would be the complete stock. I know it's not ideal...but we are really way out in the boonies, we're talking an hour drive just to hit a store that sells fishfood, and there's no room for a longer tank. I could really use a few suggestions on what that compatible mbuna would be....preferably in a non-yellow color and as common as possible to make finding them easy as possible in this fish-impoverished area. Any help/input with this will be really appreciated. Thanks!

Once you have a few more zebras they should pay less attention to the labs and focus more on each other. The stocking doesn't sound bad, you're just going to have a tough time in a tank so small. I think I's go for something like a lab/ Acei mix. They're a bit closer in temperament and would give you a color contrast. I think Coler has a 46 bowfront... hopefully he'll come along with his stocklist.

Thanks! I think the Acei sound like a good solution...they're gorgeous and I can't imagine keeping a group of zebras in such tight quarters. I feel bad making him go solo though...what do you think of maybe having 4 of each species? Same number of fish, but I'm concerned even with a lot of rockwork more species would = more fighting for space, and there's not a lot of it...hmm. We're not in a rush to set this up today or anything, so there's lots of time for input and research. I'm so thankful to have this resource...there is so much to learn with Africans!

4 Labs, 4 Aceis and "Hatchet-head" the OB zebra should be OK and are enough stocking for your tank; IMHO. Just keep an eye on the OB, since it should be the most aggressive of these fishes; but the tank's re-decor with plenty of rocks and caves will help a lot controlling the aggression issue. Good luck!!!

Another option could be to set it up as an all-male mbuna tank, provided the OB and the lab are males. My signature shows my stock list in my 45 gallon tank, to which I have also added a bn pleco. It has made for a nice, active tank - I do see a little chasing around as well as the occassional lip-lock tussle, but the colors are great and all of the fish are healthy. The only drawback may be if you do have aggression issues, it sounds like you would have a bit of a drive to swap fish to keep the tank in line. However, it is something to consider.

Sounds like we're going with efors's 4 Labs, 4 Aceis and "Hatchet-head" the OB zebra stocking...thank you! For the caves, I did a dry run with the rocks I picked up (I have a lot more I can use, but this seems to be the most stable set-up I can get before adding any silicone to the mix). Here are pics from a couple angles (quality apology, the lighting at my sister's is really bad and I took them with my phone) Would this be enough or should I find a way to make it taller? Should I use more rocks to split the gaps into smaller caves? I'm bad at visualizing how much space these guys need to comfortably move around while still keeping it effectively cave-like since I've never had them. I'm open to any suggestions...I have a lot of rock left over and access to a lot more if those pieces don't "fit" (I'm trying to rely on silicone as little as possible). Thanks again!

IMO that rockwork is OK for your 9 fishes; I like how it looks on the second pic. If the rocks fit well on each other, there is no need for silicone, I think. And you are welcome; I'm glad to be helpful!!!

Alright....although I might switch it up a bit, after looking at your pics, I'm thinking maybe move the rockwork over a bit, making it taller and skinner but maintaining open caves there, and then having a nice, shorter, regular rubble stack set back a little bit, to give it a less uniform look. I have a question I'm hoping someone can give me input on ASAP...would it be ok to substitute socolofi for the acei? I have a friend putting in an aquabid order in the morning and I just found out about it, so I have more purchasing options, and they're on the list (but not acei)...if I can tell her for sure really quick, I can get them and from my quick research, it looks like it would be a fine substitute but I'm rather insecure about this being a mbuna newbie and all....

You are thinking very well about the rockwork; go for it!
I think you are talking about the blue morph of Ps. socolofi. Well, they are a little bit more aggressive than the aceis; but I think 4 of them can live well with the 4 labs and the OB zebra. Add all of them at once in the tank; if possible.
