Stocking my 29 Gallon

My tank is a 29gallon with a pool filter sand substrate. I've done a ton of research and i can't quite bring it all together. There is a lot of conflicting information out there. For example, one source says that the Tang cichlids are good beginner cichlids and another says otherwise because they're so fragile when it comes to tank conditions.

Seeing that the footprint of my tank is not that big, i was also told that malawi cichlids are out of the question. But then again, many people said to get a bunch of yellow labs. I'm getting this from different angles, and i just need some help  I've gotten suggestions to use shell dwellers, but i don't like the use of shells in my tank, i don't particularly like the look of them.

Here is a picture of my tank:

I plan on making the rock pile a bit higher to fill in some of that dead space. And may add one more of those plants. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :dance2:

My 29 gallon is currently housing a pair of convicts, one albino one regular, and i couldn't be happier! They have interesting behaviours, are hardy, and extremely easy to breed. However convicts are pretty aggressive so if you want something more peaceful you might think about a firemouth. Yellow labs would probably work well too.

Tangs are the way to go, and are not as delicate as people make them out to be. I think this advice comes from people who just aren't keeping up thier water quality. The only thing I would suggest is mixing some aragonite in with the substrate or putting a bag of it in your filter to raise the ph and gh of the water. using limestone rocks to build that pile up will help also.

If your against shells (too bad because shellies are absolutley fasinating) then you could do a pair of goby cichlids for the bottom instead. For the rocks, go with julies. Throw in a couple of small calvus (they grow very slowly) for open water interest and your good.

Weekly water changes are the only other requirement.

someone also suggested these: a group of 5 or 6 psuedotropheus saulosi.. i loooked them up and i like them a lot. Also julidochromis ornatus was suggested as well... any opinions??

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/n_brichardi.php - If you want to try a tang, how about Neolamprologus brichardi? They were the first tang I started with. Very hardy, easy to breed (just add water - they are the african cichlid version of the convict) they would do ok in a 29g (I actually set a very young, small pair in a 5g tank temporarily while I was preparing a larger tank and they spawned!) and they are very pretty. If you get these guys, be prepared to get rid of a lot of fry! Most LFS will take them. Don't put anything else with them in a tank that small - the brichardi would tear 'em up! What is cool about brichardi is that the older siblings will help guard the next rounds of fry. If you want to go South American, think firemouth or just about any of the Aequidens, or of course, convicts. Oh, and by the way, yellow labs and/or rusties would be fine in a 29g, if it's mbuna ye be wantin! (Pirate accent added for no known reason). Enjoy!

Hi,

I would agree that Malawi Cichlids would not work as they get too large for a 29 gallon tank and even the Yellow Labs get fairly large for a tank that size I had a 4" Yellow Lab in my tank so they may not be the best fit. I agree that the Tangs would be a good choice for your tank, the shellies would do nicely as well. Good luck and send us some pics once you've got the tank stocked.

wow... first piece of advice that seems is going to work lol thanks a lot, i really really like those... now watch, i'll search every LFS in my state and no sign of them :p:

My LFS has them for 14.99 (the leleupi) is that a good price??? I think it may be more than i wanted to spend. .. But i did see some pseudotropheus socofoli which i really liked... would those work alright??? If not, i may end up with some neolamp brichardi, which i heard will be ok in my tank (hopefully i was told correctly haha)
