So let's say I delete the guppies (I'm assuming that they are the "top dwellers" being referred to.

What can go in their place?

Guppies are more all around the tank, but you could go with a school of neons or cardnels, maybe rummie tetras

I don't have a problem with the stocking you suggested. Just don't add them all at once. Spread them out over a few days in order to keep water parameters on an even keel.

You can enjoy the variety of fishes and decide over time which ones you want to focus on and which ones to stop keeping as time goes by.
