So far I have 5 corries and a pair of bolivian rams...
My tank is planted a little bit.
I really want some tight schooling fish. What would you guys suggest?
and I can't have neons...I can never get the water acidity right for them.
Thanks!

harley rasboras....

:iagree: or cherry barbs (not sure how tightly they school), other small barbs, other tetras, and other small rasboras...

Cherry barbs will play and socialize in a group more than school together. They are, however, very desireable fish. Any other kind of barb will start limiting what else you can put in the tank due to aggression.

Any rasbora, danio, or tetra should school nicely, so it is a matter of taste what you like the look of. Personally, I would go for the cherry barbs, or cardinals, or ember tetras, longfin ghost zebra danios, rummynose tetra or flame tetra or head and tail light tetra.

Mine have always done quite nicely at 7.6/7.8 range. What pH do you have? I believe most of the the issues people have with Neons are related to either:

1) poor stock

2) a tank that hasn't fully matured. (There are some species, I don't believe you should try unless your tank is at least a year old.)

or 3) poor husbandry. Neons like clean water, this means large regular water changes.

That said all the other species suggested are also great. Though in my experience cherry barbs don't necessarily "school" per se. Gold barbs are more active and school more. In my experience, they are as mild mannered as tetras (in an adequately sized school).

I think that Danios would be good based on what you are aimming to achive. But it really does depend on your personal tastes if anything. But if I were you I would also try a Rainbowfish as they are extemely colorful overall and if I am correct they do shoal...
