Stocking my first tank ever

One of the workers at a LFS said I could have a few arowanas in my 55 gallon... no need for an upgrade in tank size.

I ran out of there.

Moral of the story.. don't trust your LFS.

if you click on the link in my signiture, you'll see how big plecos can get.

Like oscars, plecos are sold in most fish stores, but very few hobbyists have tanks big enough to house them.

that is good or bad?
2 + 22 = 24 if my math is correct. And a fish 24 inches long in a 40 gallon tank is definately not good. It wont even be able to turn around.

Do you have access to a digital camara? If so, take pictures of them and post them here. These folks are tremendous at IDing fish. Then you will be able to take them back and TELL them what those fish need.

I am new to all this myself and I wish I had a nickle for every post I have read over the last month that started out - "Well, the fella at the LFS said ...." I would be well on my way to paying for that filter I need!

Do yourself a favor and figure out what you have. If it's too big. Take it back. But use places like this one to research your fish prior to buying. That way you wont look like a sucker to the guy at the LFS.

Just my 2 or 3 cents worth.

my god there are some drama queens on this forum... have any of you even seen a 24" pleco in an aquarium???

They don't grow over night, so no need to run around the room screaming its too big just yet

How big are the pleco's right now? don't just say "big", we need measurements...

Have a look at their nose and tail..... are there growths on its nose? what shape is its tail? is the tail flat or are there tips top and bottom and the tail curves inwards? A clear pic would clear this up.

Pleco's are poo factories, so if you wanna keep them for a bit and upgrade make sure you are running a lot of filtration! and keep an eye on your water quality. If this is too much hassle... then yes i would take them back.

What are the dimensions of a 40g? 30x18x18?

Just use common sense when comparing the size of the pleco's to the size of your tank.

the other is pepermint i think

one is definetly a albino long fin and the other

If you can't post pics, google "bristlenose catfish" and see if they look like yours...

Bristle nose will grow fairly slowly to a max size of around 4-5", some smaller...

Pleco's on the other hand(when fed well) should hit 6" in 6 months.

You need to figure out which one you have.

Good luck dude, keep us updated :)
