Hi all! I've been gone for awhile but been working on my tanks. The 10G is now home to 7 white clouds, I had 8 but 1 mysteriously disappeared. I settled on some red eye tetras for the 30G, I have 6 and params are stable so I'm ready to add a couple Gouramis.

I think before the advice was that if I get dwarfs to make sure I get 1 male and 1 female correct? What if they aren't dwarfs?

2nd question, when looking for healthy Gouramis should their fins be in 1 piece and not "frayed" at all? I was looking at Petsmart where I got the tetras and I just wasn't sure. Aside from their "frayed" fins they looked okay.

I appreciate any advice!

Hi,

The reason not to get two male Dwarfs is because they would fight alot.

If their fins are frayed just a little thats fine, but if its more then a little I wouldn't get one.

i currently have 1 dwarf gourami in my tank with 12 zebra danios...if i got two opaline gouramis, would the 3 gouramis get along fine?

Hi,

IME its hit and miss with gouramis.

Looking for some more input. If I get "non" dwarf Gouramis can they be any sex?

unless they are pearl or chocolate gouramis, no. males will litteraly fight to the death.

opaline gouramis (and the like) kill everything in the tank that is smaller then they are, and they get to about six inches long, which doesnt leave alot to put with them. i have even seen them challenge fish taht are bigger than they are.

So my best bet would be a pair of male/female dwarf Gouramis?

Technically yes but you will never find a female gourami at the LFS. If you must, must, must, get two make sure that they are as similar in size as possible. Getting one that's bigger then another is a guarentee that the smaller one will be killed. Frayed finnage is just a result of poor water quality and overstocking at the LFS. As long as the fish doesn't have any real recognizable physical signs of disease and is not acting lethargic or sickly the frayed finnage should correct itself once he is put in to a more adequate environment :)

Thanks boofish, I would be fine with 1 Gourami but what else could I get to finish out the tank?

How about instead of a gourami, a couple of Angelfish (I'm totally biased 'cause I love angels), or how about a couple of rams? I always loved the look of hatchets too but your perams have to be pristine with the latter two.
