Stocking question

I have 5 of them and they are great! Faster than the silver dollar and imo they are much more beautifu! Check them out..

lol, i just read up on these guys and seem very interesting. but with them only growing to be about 3 inches, i'd be scared of one of my cichlids seeing them as food once they get larger

they are too fast to become food, ideal tank mates for these guys are piranhas! try them you'll see.....

Bichir size depends on species. The largest maxes out at 39", the smallest hit about one foot. The ones you most commonly see are dinosaur eels and are P. senegalus, which hits 12", some rare specimens could reach 15" or so. P. delhezi also stays about 12-14". Synodontis are not actually that big, huge ones are about 7". Three in a 4'x2' tank isn't bad. One would be good, they are an effective bottom feeder and I have seen them with red devils, jack dempseys, jaguars, oscars, etc. The bristlenose don't get big enough to not be an easy target for the cichlids.

The only problem I would see with the bucktooth tetras is actually finding some. I don't think I have ever seen them in an LFS. The giant danios are very common and will definite work.

Thanks for your input. Bichirs seem pretty neat, especially if there are some that max out at 7".

Believe it or not, the Big Al's in my area is having a special on bucktooth tetras this week (still kinda expensive at almost $13 a fish). I have some thinking to do about this... but thanks to everyone! :D

I have 6 Giant Danio's with my two JD's. The JD's don't bother them, got them out and about more.

Some Pictus cats on the bottom to keep the bottom active...

The synodontis eupterus hit about 7", the smallest bichirs hit about a foot.

Pictus are very skittish and jumpy so when you see them it is usually a flash of silver/gray across the bottom of the tank. They are schooling so you woudl have to get at least 3 if not 6 or so. The S. eupterus is much more enjoyable in my experience.

aardvark1, how big are your JDs now?

and retileguy2727, thanks agains for your info. The S. eupterus does seem to be very cool. I'm down to thinking one of these guys, oscar, JD and 3 of either silver dollars or giant danios. Haven't had a chance to check out bucktooth tetras at the LFS yet, will try to do this today :)

GOOD LUCK!!:dance2:
