Stocking question

plenty can go with clown loaches, for example, Geo's and smaller acaras are perfect for mixing with clown loaches. The main concern would just be tank size.

55g is the minimum recommended for any cichlid setup. If you want oscars you could have 1, some would say two but you will need to move once they get too big. 55g is great for smaller african cichlids, like mbuna which are very colorful. You could also go with discus as long as you change water more frequently or even other smaller new world cichlids. Its all up to you but just find out which type you want then decide how many from there.

a minimum 55 for any cichlid?? what about angels?keyhole? rams? apistos? shellies?(this list can go on from here);)

How many clown loaches do you have? I would just give them to someone else and do cichlids for both tanks. lol. but lots of cichs can be housed with clown loaches. So far i've had severums, keyholes, rams and festivums which were friendly and ok with the loaches.

With your 55, you could get away with so much. As for colorful, you could try malawi cichlids or lake tang. But with lake tang cichlids, if you get them as juveniles it might take a while to grow them.
