I'm getting a new tank 20 gallon long, will this be too many fish or should it be alright?
5 cory cats
5 platys
6 flame tetras
2 guppies

i won't throw them all in at once of course.

I would drop two of the platy's, add one guppy (males will pick on a single female), and you should be good. Some will probably call this overstocked, but if you have a 20g long, then it should be ok (it has the same surface area available for gas exchange as a 29). Drop a cory and go with either a trio of platy's or guppies if you want to allow room for fry. Remember, extra filtration will allow you to push the envelope a little bit on stocking density.

so i have a 200 gph filter, i would prefer to have only the platys however i have 1 male guppy already would he be okay solo as he is now he seems happy but i thought he might be happier with a social group

Keep him solo. One female will be harrassed too much, and two males may fight. I'd also go for a single gender of platy's unless you have plans for the fry. Otherwise, looks like a good group.
