Looking for suggestions for additional stocking of 55 gallon. Current inhabitants are 6" CAE, 4 corys, 1 kuhlis loach.

Looking at possibly:

2 additional corys
6-8 Barbs
Couple of Gouramis

Still need to add additional plantings (fake), driftwood and caves either DIY or bought. Would like more active fish as the tank is setup to view from across the room while relaxing.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I would add a Red belly piranha and a single wolffish.

I really hope bama's kidding...

Your CAE will eventually be a foot long, and may become agressive to other fish. They can be real terrors of the tank the bigger they get, so be prepared to give him up later.

Adding some cories is fine, though you might want to throw in some more kuli loaches as well, they are social fish, if not schooling fish.

Gourami should be good to add some activity and visual appeal to the tank, so long as the CAE leaves them alone.

you should probably get rid of the CAE before you get any new fish. you can also get him his own tank if you want to keep him.

after you get rid of the CAE, you should get some more kuhlis, maybe four.

itsw not advisable to mix barbs with gouramis because barbs can be very nippy with the gouramis fins. tetras, such as red eyes, would be better.

if you want multiple gouramis, get pearls. they are very cool looking, and they arent aggressive towards one another. if you dont want pearls, get a dwarf gourami, but you can only have one male. other gouramis, like blue gouramis (and gold, opaline, three spot, and platinum) are very aggressive and will kill everything in the tank that is bigger than they are. kissing gouramis get to big for your tank.

Thanks for the suggestions. The CAE was moved from a 20 gal, which contained a large Blue Gourami. The CAE would go after the Gourami, but not any other fish, I assume they were all too small. So far the Gourami has not shown any signs of agression.

I was not sure if Bama's kidding or not. When I was younger, we kept Red Belly Piranha's and they grew to a fairly large size and ate anything in the tank.

Even with adding the Kuhlies, Barbs, Corys and possibly a couple of Gouramis, the tank, in my opinion, would still seem pretty empty.

Assuming you don't get the barbs and you find a new home for the CAE, you could some keyhole cichlids. I really prefer them to gouramis. I love my keyholes and they're a very peaceful cichlid, very curious and active and are always doing something. Mine are not at all aggressive, and they are a pair and have bred in my tank. They generally stay in the bottom half of the tank, I'm not sure if that will cause a problem w/ your cories and loaches in a 55(definitely get more of each). Maybe someone else will have an opinion.

Then you'll need something for the top of your tank; maybe some silver hatchets?

Maybe just go with a Largemouth Bass.

Maybe just go with a Largemouth Bass.
really? a LM would probably grow too big for that tank and eat it's inhabitants.
get rid of the CAE as the others mentioned, and get more cories and khulies. after that I personally reccomend some congo tetras and a keyhole cichlid.

OK just get an African Tiger Fish. That should work out great.
