I have a 55g tank that I would like to stock with cichlids. Around how many fish can i have. The tank will have excellent filtration with a fluval, and two sponge filters.

if you go africans depends on what you want you can add a colony of a type of african cichlids with amazon and central american cichlids your numbers are going to be lower but all in all there are thousands of different cichlids some will work and alot will not in a 55gal maybe research a bit and choose a few from each area and then ask to see what members think, happy hunting..

I like Lake Malawi mbunas, but which one do you want? New world or African? New world cichlids include: rams, discus, angels, oscars, ect. Africans include: mbunas, Africans (duh!), ect.

actually africans include mbuna- which is malawi, tanganyika- lamps, altos and ect; , lake victorian- haps, west africa- jewels, kribs and a few others.

amazons-, oscars, geophagus, angels, discus, and alot more.

central americans-, firemouths, convicts, honduran red points and a few others

I was looking for the africans.

cool well the next step would be what do you want in the african department do you want a colony only of one species and try your luck at breeding or do you just want a community of african cichlids, basically theres two choices the malawis or tanganyika's cichlids if you go malawi - mbuna i would put male only conspefics and put enough of them in the tank to avoid a fish just picking at one fish all the time if you go alot there will not be just one target fish at all times you could go tanganyika and do a community or specialize in a harem of a certain species so many choices aye may i suggest that you do some homework you might want to google malawi fishes and then do a search on taganyika cichlids and go from there..
