Strange Ammonia Problem?

There may be ways to help this improve for the long term as well. You do not describe the habitat of your betta. Small bowls are virtually impossible to maintain. Aquaria need surfaces for the bacteria to colonize. These are found in filter materials but also any other surface in the tank including substrate and decor.

Please provide a complete description of your setup so long term care can be helped. After all, you now have a living thing that is your responsibility.

My experience with small betta bowls is... its easier just to change the water every couple days than try to establish the nitrogen cycle. My bettas were happy enough swimming into a small glass for a few minutes while their water was changed 100% every 2-3 days. No need to really worry about testing the water if you just change it like this. :)
