one of my jahanni mbuna's is acting real weird, he is sticking around the bubble tube by the charcoal box,he wont go anywhere else, yet all of my other fish seem fine what should i do?

What's that fish? I googled about it and found nothing.

I found it. It's a lake malawi cichlid.

I'd tell your fish is hiding from something or has not yet adapter to the tank.

I've never kept cichlids, but malawi's are often given a rocky setup with lots of caves for them to hide.

It would be apreciated if you could describe your tank setup, water conditions and tankmates.

ive got a 29 gallon with a ugf and 2 bubble tubes i also have an air stone bar along the back i have various(10) fake plants and some real plant matter along the floor i have lots of tan colored gravel and a load of rocky caves and i even have a cave i made with rocks and silicone in the tank i have 4 jewel cichlids 2 johanni mbunas and a pl*co (all babies except 2 young mating jewels. all fish are getting along

As you describe it, there should not be a problem with the set up.

By now, keep watching him for some days. Pay special attention to his general appearance (white spots on skin, missing scales, clamped fins) and if he is eating or not.

Remember every fish has his own personality, and he might just like to stay there on his own. Watc him closely and feel free to return here and share your experiences. Hope someone with more cichlid experience can show up and help.

JUST IN CASE:

Did you do a proper cycle in your tank? I don't know how long it's been set, or how is your filter working. If not, you coiuld take a look in the newbee forum's stickies where there's a lot of explanation on water quelity and cycling procedures.

is your charcoal box at the top of the tank? i've noticed that with mbuna, if they start to hang in the corners, they are really getting picked on.

as patoloco said, keep an eye on it, particularly the gill area and its fins... some fish are just kinda shy. does it get food? does it get chased into the corner? sometimes when a fish hangs out near a bubbler, its an indication that it is having problems getting oxygen into its blood, but thats a stretch with this little information.

keep us posted.

i just noticed that you have 2 of the johanni... melanochromis are notorius for being super aggressive. just ask anyone who had an auratus take over a tank. while the johanni are usually more passive, they are still mbuna.

its entirely possible that you have two males and its taken until now for one to establish his dominance. once dominance is established, its a very noticible difference in behaviour, especially for the loser.

heres an article that describes two males in your situation.
