My Pets Play So Nice Don't They?!!

I had a 10g cycling tank with 3 African Dwarf Frogs and one betta. On the 3rd week of cycling the betta's fins started tearing pretty bad (I believe from the cycling stress). So, I floated him in a bowl with BettaFix, but he didn't seem to happy in there so I moved him back into the tank. Then his fins kept tearing more so I moved him to a non heated 2.5g with water only (no gravel, no filter) in it (of course w/ water conditioner and BettaFix). The temp then dropped to about 73. After I got home last night I noticed several small white dots under his chin. 1st I thought it may be fungus, but later I looked at it, and did some more research, and now I'm thinking it may be Ich. So I moved him back into the bowl and floated him again in the 10g tank. Temp in there is 79 degrees. :thud: But I don't think he likes being in that bowl at all. Now there is only about 5 little white "sugar" looking grains on him.

I read deveeka's article on ich, but I now my questions are:
Could this have been caused from the water changes and stress? I feel so bad now.
Would it be better to move him to the 2.5g to give him more room as long as I get a heater for it and do the heat and salt treatment?
Should I treated the cycling 10g now also that only has 3 AFD's in it?

Here is the thread I originally started on it:

Thanks again!

Most importantly, I would say stop moving the betta between the bowl and the tank. The stress caused by all those temp changes really stands to make things worse for him.

Since you already had him in the 10g, I would treat both. I would not do it with salt, however. Salt and ADFs to me sounds like a no-no. (Amphibians are usually really adverse to salinity). Instead I would use a malacite treatment or find another place you can house the ADFs for a week or so while you treat with salt.

I responded to your PM, as far as the plants, they won't make any difference with ich, it only feeds on fish, and cannot live more than a few days without a host.
The ADF's and salt worry me as well, but I really know little about them, there are a few ADF experts around, and an article in the articles forum as well that may help. I also agree that the moving him around is not a good thing for the reason already stated, whever he is leave him there and treat him full course while making sure the water stays good (multiple water changes light feeding and lots of testing) As far as malechite green, I haven't heard that it is particularly hard on Beatta's but it is very unnecessary. I would think it would be hard on amphibians but as said I really don't know.

Ok, so I'll put him in the heated 2.5g and continue treatment with BettaFix and Salt, that way he has room to move around while being treated. I guess I should leave the frogs as is in the cycling tank, so that I don't stop the cycle and the ich will die anyways with the absence of fish.
