Striped Raphael question

Mine only hangs out at night. I never see him during the day. However I do know that he is doing his job since the tank is realatively clean and when I do see him he has a nice fat belly. He has been in my tank for more than four years and he is about seven inches long.

Hey, how long did it take yours to reach 7 inches?

Mine seems ot have stopped growing at around 5''.. he's maybe 2 years old. Very healthy fish though

I bought a striped raphael about 6 months ago and haven't seen it since... Don't feed it anything... Well I just saw it a week ago for the first time since I put it in and its huge. Maybe 6 inches and really fat. I only saw it while I had all of the rockwork out to clean and havent seen it since... lol

I have a Q about them too..How big do they get?

many say 7-8'' .. like I said, I've had mine for a couple of years and he's maybe 5''

They will do fine in a 20G, they dont' need a lot of space.. and honestly, they seem to prefer less space.

and only people who have the most pristine tanks or have lots of bottom feeders should worry about special feeding. If you'r elike most of us and food reaches the bottom and sits there overnight while feeding, your raphael will do fine.

I love the spotted ones and now I have a striped one.

They are very low maintenance, and I might add in my experience extremely hardy fish.

Someone called them a golf ball with fins, and I agree - though I've always though of them as the death star of my aquarium in that they are just covered in spikes and when bigger will lazily coast around the tank. Keep that in mind and never -NEVER net one of them or you'll be cutting the net to get them out of it!

The one I got now comes out during the day to feed when I feed the others. He sucks up flakes readily, then goes back to his perch in one of the driftwood cavities.

When I had bigger ones they would snack on small fish. I tend to believe that it's the Raphael that ate my ghost shrimp as well.

One of my favorites... period.

My striped rapheal has been in the tank for just over four years now. When I got him he was just a tiny thing maybe two inches. In the four plus years I have had him he has grown considerably and eveytime I see him he looks bigger to me. I guess he is eating well.

If you want to see them more, you should put a low watt light close to the tank. Somewhere the light can reach most of the tank. I wait about 20 minutes after turning the lights out, then put food in the tank. Never fails with my striped raph.:)

Oh, something for people to look for (most do it anyways)

They lodge themselves inside of objects and will die lodged inside of them if you pull them out of the water. Be careful if you have any small caves or driftwood, always be sure to check it before taking it out and leaving it out.

This is a very good thing to mention. I have this one tree like decoration thing that looks like white driftwood if there is such a thing and that is where my striped raphael hangs out most of the time for the last four years. I cannot take this piece out of the water or he will come with it. It must be like a security blanket to him.
