Stuck in a Fishless Cycle...

I know - so many fish and so little time. Do you have any ideas of the types of fish you like?

I would like a group of zebra danios (6-8 fish), my friend has a tank of just danios and they seem very active and entertaining. I'd like to have a betta if its temperment would permit it (something to research).

I'm open to suggestion beyond that.

bettas are very inividual fish, their temperments vary drastically. if you want active, tetras are active and pretty compatible overall. i like cardinals, they are colorful, i like xrays too.

I have some blood fin tetras in my aquarium in my office - they're very pretty and quite active. I also am hooked on coryadoras (to me a tank just isn't complete with a few of those guys scurrying around the bottom).

I've come up with the following proposed population for the tank, assuming the testing and water change this weekend go well:

6x zebra danios
6x xray tetras
2x corys
1x pleco

Too many or too few fish for a 20 gal tank?

I'm still a little nervous about the tap pH baseline being 8.0 - 8.4, but if everything else is stable, I'll give it a go.

pH isn't that important; you can keep almost anything in that pH. GH is a more important question, but the fish you list are all very adaptable.
