I always suggest harlequin rasboras or cherry barbs. Beautiful fish that are not too expensive and pretty easy to find.
Hengeli or espei rasboras.

That pic is pretty accurate as to their color. I have one espei and 8 hengeli. (I ordered a completely different fish but that's what they got in and I took them anyway.) The Hengeli are very similarly colored but less vibrant and they lack the orange eye of the espei.
I've got 9 of these guys in a planted 10 gallon with some cherry shrimp and a nerite snail. They stay pretty tightly together even though there is no other threat to them. They eat anything and everything and have been very easy to keep. I've had them about a year and a half now. Love em!

Really? They seem to do ok in my girlfriends tank, good ol' Los Angeles stone water.
