does anyone know how fast jacks grow and how fast they get their adult colors? mine seams to be growing fast in size and slowy changing between a light violet and his/her juvie stripes

It depends on size of tank, feeding schedule, and maybe genetics. They do get to grow up to about 8in. I have a pair of Jack Dempseys and these haven't gotten any bigger than 5in lately and I dont think they'll grow any more than that.

mine grew really quickly at first. then slowed after the first year. but now in his 2nd year he has grown 3/4 of an inch in less than 6 months. he is now a little over 6 1/2 inches. and i dont expect him to really stop quite yet.

as for color, i cant really answer that as i had a drastically different lighting set up and he looked much different, plus feeding him a variety of foods really boosted his color.

thanks for the advice, he/her is only about two and1/2 inches at present growing fast maybee a baby spurt? the color i think is moods and letting me know what he/her is going to look like i still cant tell if he or her :dive2:

I saw one 13 or 14 in. It lived in a 12 in tank for a long time because it was bent. The LFS had it in a larg tank hoping its spine would streighted out. It had a hunch back look.
It was a very pretty JD with a tun of color. Somone picked out the fish. THey didn't have it to long. I hope he is doing ok.

i have noticed today his/her, by the way how do you sex a jack?, top fin is now getting a bit of reddish on the edge how colorful do they get? thanks :coffee2:

Very easy. Look at the gill plate. Female has grean streaks, Male has none. This is the only area female has more color than male.
