stupid newbie question

I just read the informal faq. Very helpful. Question that might be real dumb but gotta ask: Do I keep the weight on the plant that it comes with? If so, forever or until roots take hold?

Nope, you take it off. The only stupid question is "can I keep fish in my used toilet water?" Ask away, infact you would be supprised how many people do things wrong because they think that they would look stupid asking. Ask away! Good luck with your tank.
