This is a really stupid question: if i am having problem with ph of water as it comes out of tap at 5.5, would boiling water and letting it cool then give me nice safe water with ph of 7 to put in tank? Or am i missing something???

Well as far as I know, boiling water will only evaporate it but still leave behind the elements that dictate pH, KH and so forth.

Boiling is a means of lowering carbonate hardness, which would have the effect of lowering your pH if carbonates were the dominant pH controlling compound in your tank. Given your KH, which isn't terribly low (not high or even moderately high, just not super low), I doubt that this is the case. In any event, not a solution for raising KH and pH, go with crushed coral.

I have to agree with happychem and go with the crushed coral.
problem is...
where to get crushed coral? Local fish stores don't sell it, and even ebay doesn't have anyone selling it! But will keep looking...

Breed softwater dwarf cichlids and discus, it would be insanely easy with water like that. At least it takes the pressue off having to use and RO/DI unit. Your only concerns would be a good diet and removing eggs when they're laid for rearing in another tank.
