My striped raphael nearly died two days ago when he swam into the overflow for my sump filter and wound up lying on the diffuser plate for the wet-dry filter! He is now living in the sump so he can't swim into the overflow again. The reason he was able to get into the wet/dry is because I had to remove the prefilter because it clogged. Is there any way I can keep my raphael out of the overflow so I don't need to worry about him? Thanks.

Yes, but the prefilter goes in the back part of the overflow. I want to keep the raphael out of the overflow altogether! Would weaving a piece of nylon screen between the overflow's slats accomplish this, or would he just muscle it out of the way?
Addeum: My ADF Also managed to get into the biofilter this way. I currently have a crawfish living under the biofilter and I do NOT want that frog or a neon tetra getting in with that guy! Thanks.

I had the same problem with fish getting into the overflow. I placed a peice of "screen" inside the "skimmer box". I used this plastic grid sheet used with yarn. Sorry i dont know what its called. I simply cut a single peice and bent it to fit inside the skimmer box covering the slots. Since putting it in place i've not had to rescure a single one of my fish.
I had to adjust the hight of the skimmer box becuse placing the screen inplace raised the waterlevel a bit.

Phycha: That's what my mom always called it anyway. Craft stores would probably have a different name for it. Good stuff.
