Talking about this in another thread with some others but thought id start a new thread just about this to see if i could get some more help...

Is there such a thing as a submersible light that would be powerful enough to grow a succesful planted tank...or possibly some type of fixture to seal an existing light...any help/links where to buy would be helpful...

Thanks

ok...would building a acrylic tube that was water tight defeat the whole purpose of an open light?...of course then there is the problems of venting to combat overheating...this might be a losing idea...

Why would you want to?

he is building a vivarium and has 30g(i think tht is wht it was, to lazy to look for the thread) at the bottom of the land mass.

Well my idea is to add a slot between the mass and tank. maybe a custom slot tht lets u slide the hood in and out.....u kinda get wht im saying? i can dray a picture if need be. anyway the small spiral bulbs might wrk u would need vents or maybe a comp fan to keep from over heating......sound like a fun project im a lil jealous

Good stuff BK...im a little worried about any gaps between the tank and the glass cause of the weight of the grout...i thought about maybe hollowing out a space underneath and am still tossing that idea around...i was talking to one of the mechanics at our shop and he was telling me to look for industry florescents fixtures because they are waterproof against water and various liquids (hopefully i wont ever get any various liquids in the tank!)...

Alright...i think i may have decided what i'm going to do Rex...feel free to tear this apart because i'm a true amature with this lighting crap but think i've made a few progressive steps...

I think i'm going to abandon the whole idea of the submersible lights...lower my water level a little...and get this Ballast system...

Then after reading your very informative site on lighting and WPG im thinking that id be fine with getting two of these 32W 10000k White Powercompact bulbs

Whats the suggested heigth of your lights from the water?

Hopefully I'm on the right track cause i'm itching to get started and grow some plants but dont want to make any hastey moves

Alright I think i've done enough research and reading that i have a basic grasp on the concept of lighting (enough knowledge to f*#$ something up) that i'm going to go ahead and buy my ballasts...I like the smaller length of the square pin bulbs (12.5" compared to the smallest 36watt bulb which is only 16.5") from Marine Depot but if a fellow United States Marine recommends something then how could i refuse...come 01000 i'm gonna get on the horn and order the 2x36w kit from AHS...thanks for all the help guys...ill send some pictures once everything is installed...
