Substitution for gravel

I'm in the process of switching my tanks to pool filter sand. Have my 10gal changed over so far and I love it (as do my cories). It's much easier to keep clean.

My LFS sells pool filter sand for $10/50lb bag, but it's probably cheaper at a pool supply or hardware store.

There are a few other threads here recently pertaining to this, so dig around and read through them also.

i'd recommend coarse sandblasting sand. it is black and comes in a 100 lb bag for six bucks. i'm a huge fan!
oh, i forgot. you can search the forums for "substrate" or "sand" and come up with some great info. you should be able to find all the stuff you need that way. good luck

kdw3,

Welcome to AquariaCentral, home of the most sand and gravel-using fish-keepers in the entire planet !

I'm going to move this thread over to the General FW forum since this is not directly a beginner's question !

I setup my new tank with sand yesterday.....
:D
as recommended by many others a pillow case is the way to go for cleaning it - it works a treat.....

i just used ordinary building sand from a hardware store

(£1 for 25 kilos...)

the tank looks way good......

just as a note of caution: watch the ph for awhile to make sure nothing in the sand is leeching. i noticed no one mentioned it during the thread and it bears notice as some types of sand will cause the ph to rise.

Some white playset sand is crushed marble. It will raise ph. Very slowly but it does raise it over time.
:)
