Substrate And Shrimp - Compatability?

I've been searching the net for some answers as to the type of Substrate to use in a planted tank that would be the home for shrimp as well.

I've read about the things that threatens shrimp's longevity, some of which being ammonia, nitrites, and high nitrates. PH GH and KH as well. Heavy metals such as copper, lead, etc also play a role in . Assuming all those are controlled and within good parameters, what about substrate?

I noticed that some people use SeaChem's Flourite/Flourite Black. However, these substrates both contain Copper. What's everyone's thoughts on that?

I use eco complete, flourite red, soil master select, and normal gravel with no issues in my invert tanks.

I have used ada amazonia I and II, flourite black sand as well as some of the substrates msjinkzd has listed without any ill effects on my shrimp.

The ada soil has been known to release ammonia after its first put in the tank. It also lowers pH so is great for caridina shrimp. You just have to monitor your parameters carefully initially (as you do with any new tank anyway).

Most planted tank substrates will work just fine. Like Msjinkzd said, just make sure you know what you are putting in your aquarium before you do it, and monitor it closely for a while after you do!
