Substrate fir a 50g Tank

A couple of questions on substrate:

1. How much substrate will I need? Is there a rule of thumb?
2. What would be the ideal substrate composition if I intent to put plants?
3. What would be a good all-around substrate?

none plants a inch is fine. with plants 2-3 inch.

i have used cheap gravel and sand from home depot in my planted tanks. you could check out eco complete but i didnt want to spend the money on that.

^ I have the same thing in my 55 med/heavy planted. Works, and looks Great.

I have 70% mixed medium size and small size gravel and 30% pool filter sand. The nice thing about pool filter sand is that it seems to stay down and not really stir up much.

I also have an UGF on the gravel side.

I used medium grade river rock from Petco. They had a sale.
