Ok i'm setting up a new 55gal. I have many before and have always used the colored fish rocks you get at the LFS. This time i want to plant my tank and have fish. I plan on Plantin it a desent amount with plants. I also know I want to have kuhlis and some glofish i just like the way they look. I plan on haven some snails in there also. What i want to know is what a good way to go is on the substrate. I really like the look of sand and want to get away from fish pebbles. I seen in a few posts people say the use soil. So what i was thinking was going with about .5in of soil .25in of gravel or something of the like and 1.25in in sand to get a 2in substrate. What are some of your ideas i'm startin to go crazy over this.

Well i'll post mine for Eco Complete
I like the color ( i got the black ) it makes all the other colors stand out more,and it is nutrient rich.
as with any product there hase been some bad batches, a while back. easy to tell though, the water i the bag will be black, if it is milky white it is no good.
and it comes with a flocculent to aid in clearing the tank up quickly.
Have it in both my tanks absolutly no problems or complaints

How about 2 inch layer of EcoComplete and 1" layer of sand? You can also have the midground and background (where the plants go) in Soil and the foreground in sand for esthetic effect. Place a card board divider before pouring the soil and sand, then remove the card board slowly after grading is done.
