Hello everyone. :thm:

I'm setting up a 29 gal Tanganyikan tank. I've read conflicting ideas on substrate. Just about everyone says sand is the best, but the depth of the substrate seems to be open for debate. I've read that it should be deep to support the rock work. Another book said only 1/2 inch, unless I'm using an undergravel filter, which I am not. Anyone with experience with this? Thanks.

I prefer sand, since a Tang tank would not be complete without some shellies ;) . I would use black if i had it to do over, or maybe black with just a little crushed coral mixed in to match the limestone. I would suggest stacking the rockwork in contact with the bottom. Put a piece of plexiglass down first to spread the weight. This way if the fish dig (which they will), they can't undermine the reef and send it tumbling into the front glass...crack.....gush....drip.....drip.
