substrate for java moss & fern

Hello,
I was just wondering if either java moss or java fern can be kept healthy w/ just plain aquarium gravel in the tank or do they need flourite too?

Neither of them require any substrate to grow just fine. You can go bare bottom, if that pleased you! They are commonly attached to rocks and driftwood of any size and shape. They are very easy to remove from a tank for aggressive medications, also. This makes them good candidates for Quarantine tanks. You could, but definately don't need to, attach Java fern just above the substrate and let the roots dig into the gravel. This may help some, but probably not in any noticable manner.
 
Sumpin'fishy got it right on the head. They don't need anything special... just a stump or somthing to grow on and a little bit of light.

Anubias, Java fern & Java moss grow nicely on a stump. Try that out.
 
ime, I have had better luck tying the java fern to some driftwood with cotton thread.
Seems the rhizome always wastes away on me when I cover it with gravel.
Java pretty much grows on anything, including slow moving fish (at least it seems that way)
 
Thanks for the advice....I was thinking of adding java fern and moss to my son's gold fish tank. Its a 20 gallon long w/ one goldfish that has " telescope" eyes....I would like to get a big piece of driftwood and tie java fern all over it and maybe tie some moss to a rock. Do you think its possible or will the goldfish eat it all up? I would really love to add live plants to this tank! I have live plants in my other tank (community freshwater) and I love it....I'm not crazy about fake plants and this goldfish tank really needs some sprucing up. I would love any suggestions!!
