Substrate for new Malawi Tank

thanks ! It's got to where I quite like it myself - had to post the interim pics though lol just to show that we (I) can learn from our (my) mistakes. I wish I had space for your tank though :)

I totally agree with you on the natural look though - let the fish be the focus

yeah I like that too...with a black background and the right rockwork the fish would just pop. Cool that if buffers as well.

I will explore the thaught of black. I have black gravel in 1 community tank and I do like it.

I just finished switching my mbuna tank to sand. It was a royal pain in the posterior, and I'm exhausted. I went with the black Tahitian Moon sand (got 2 bags for $12.99 total - what a steal) and it looks pretty great. The synodontis is squeaking up a storm and rooting around in the sand like a drunk puppy.

Great Deal on the tahitian moon sand. I'm going to check it out at a big retail pet chain and if I decide on that I will have my Lil' LFS order it for me. I like supporting my small community businesses!
All the input has been great. I am glad it was discussed from multiple views, good, bad or indifferent.
Gonna share a lil' clay pot 101 if anyone wants to check for the thread.

in the interests of debate :)

I don't like the look of the pots myself...rockwork, rockwork, rockwork. And, I like my caves to be open at both ends so that fish can exit if threatened by a more aggressive specimen/use them as escape routes from chasing. Of course you can do that with pots too I know with a bit of DIY.

I either use broken ones (large pieces) or if I use a smaller whole one then I dremmel out the bottom hole to make it a bit bigger. That way when a bigger fish goes in then the bit smaller one can escape out the hole.

Good

Just to render you thoroughly indecisive lol I think that the black substrates with a black background and some rockwork looks fantastic for malawis.
I agree. I have the salt and pepper sand (Eco Complete African Cichlid sand to be exact) and I'd rather have all black. The pictures I've seen with black sand and black background really make the colors of the fish pop. :) Whenever I upgrade my Malawians, they'll have black sand.

I have play sand in mine right now, but when I re-due my tank I plan on using black sand, this is what I think would look great...and it has buffering power, added bonus.
Is this the same as the Tahition Moon Sand? Or maybe just has some added calcium? I was under the impression that the regular TMS was inert, so I'm glad to find this stuff...for my future Malawian upgrade. :)
