Substrate or not substrate for Discus?

sorry to hijack this thread but i have the same question just in a smaller tank i have a 36X21X12 tank its a 34g and i was wondering how many discus in that would be advisable or is it even worth it?

Please don't do that. You'll regret it.
Your tank is too small, even for a minimum number of discus, i.e. 5 - to keep the peace with the pecking order. You need a larger tank - min. 55 gals.
BTW, I haven't checked the calculation - but at first glance, it seems that a 36X21X12 is larger than 34 gal. Am I incorrect ?

sorry my mis calculation i wasnt paying attention its actually 20" tall making the tank a 37 gallon
and i wont i was just wondering if it could be done i dont think i could afford to buy such beautiful/expensive fish and not take care of them properly
 
If I did the math right, it's just about 39.2 gallons. teigan666 I've been doing so much research and asking so many questions over the last month or so... that I completely agree with discuspaul about the 55 gallon minimum. I started with a 33 gallon myself and I got the same response from everyone I spoke with - to go with minimum a 55 gallon. German rams would do ok in a 40 gallon :)
