substrate Question Budget?

Regular gravel or sand is fine.

I have soilmaster in charcoal and red. I like the way it looks and I'm confident in its ability to carry nutrients to the roots.

However it is very light and easily siphoned out during water changes. Still, I would recommend it very much over aquatic soil, flourite, etc. You get a whole lot more for your money and it's pretty much the same stuff except a little less dense. Which in my thinking might actually make it better than the "plant" substrates since less density allows more root circulation and maybe better nutrient exchange.

But like most people are saying - good old sand and/or gravel is all you really need. I used to buy into the "planted" tank substrate hype but over time I've learned it's just marketed overpriced hooeydooey.

Go to a home store and get some medium sand or play sand. You could also get gravel there but it's usually larger diameter. Some people like that though. All I can tell you is that you don't need to spend a lot of money to have a safe, effective and attractive substrate.
