Substrate Vs. Glass

Hello all,
I have been hearing about the placement of live rock,heres what my gathering is,Placing live rock on the glass will create pressure points and scratch the glass,and silicone.People say placing rock on substrate is unstable,but wouldn't the substrate conform to the bottom of the rock?

You made a good point about pressure points.

I think the best method of placing live rock in a system is to use either PVC on the bottom or eggcrate to avoid pressure points. Then add live rock. Then finally sand.

Sand is an unreliable stabilizer because inverts and other fish can dig in the sand and cause rocks to fall or move. Which would be even worse if the fish or invert was still under the rock.

perfectly said FD. i agree 100% I wish i woulda used eggcrate on the bottom of my tank. it'd be way to much work to tear my tank down now and do it... oh well

lol I am in the same boat. Someone on AC suggested eggcrate on another board and I thought it was a great idea. I will be using that idea for my next tank setup.

well it depends on the eggcrate if you get those cardboard then yea it will degrade but the styroform one will techinically last for ever

egg crate isn't what you put eggs in its the screen type thing that some offices use over their flouresent lighting,.. it looks like a large sheet of tiny ice cube trays with no bottom..
at least thats what i have read on other sites, i assume this is what your refering to..

Aren't there plastic egg crates too?

So about these "pressure points"??? I have most of my LR leaning partly on the back of the tank to stabilize the rock...uh, and on the side too. I don't know how else I could have gotten it to stand in a pyramid without worrying that it would topple and bust THROUGH the glass. I guess I figured leaning on was better than falling through...perhaps I was mistaken?
