substrate?

Does substrate choice play an important role in a planted tank? Ive used estes sand before but it got very compacted and hard, so this time around id like to opt for something else.
I came across Flourite, is this good to use?
It comes in black which i think will be my first color choice

I LOVE Eco Complete, I am very glad I went with that for my newly planted 55. It is well worth it. I have flourite in my planted 5g, and I think the eco is so easy to plant in. Flourite is okay, IMO.

yeah i got turned off to the flourite after reading about how messy it is to clean...i just cant deal with rinsing forever right now :headshake2:

It plays an important role for heavy root feeders, like swords. If you have plants that take nutrients from the water column, then substrate won't be too much of a worry. Chances are, you'll have both, so yes, it's important.
