Flourite for me, but my 55 in Dec will be Flourite with a 1" layer of sand on top.

how is flourite with a layer of sand over it? in the future im thinking about using sand but i don't know how well that will work with plants, so i wanted to add a base layer of flourite gravel to feed and anchor the plants and then adding a layer of sand over it because i like the look of sand as a substrate.

Won't the sand fall through the florite and end up on the bottom anyway?

i only use sand in my tank i stopped using gravel a few years ago when i got into rays.

I have a layer of Ecco complete under the gravel in one of my tanks but I can't tell if it's doing any good as the plants seem fine in both thanks.

I used a layer of eco under gravel in my aquarium too before recently switching to 100% eco. It looked like the plants did much better with 50% eco on the bottom as the plants seemed to highly prefer rooting in the eco vs. rooting in the gravel - whether it was the nutrients or just the soil vs. gravel consistancy, I don't know.
