However, that article is one of the ones that explains the cycle of ammonia to nitrite to nitrate pretty well, but it doesn't talk about fishless cycling. I linked it to explain why the ammonia would be high with fish in the tank, as I was about to head to meeting and couldn't hit on too much stuff.

If the OP comes back there is enough in this thread to get them asking questions and I figured we could educate from there. Sometimes too much info at once drives people away

Just want to add, a lot of people new to the hobby go through some sort of "whoops!" phase like this. You are not alone and we are here to help. Take some time to to do some reading about the new lives you are caring for and you will be amazed at how complex and beautiful aquaria really is!
