Suction cups again

Hello,

Has anyone found a way to extend the life of a suction cup in salt water? I have them on my protein skimmer pump, power heads, heater, thermometer etc. They work well for a while then quit. I've had 3 thermometers pulled into the tank and ruined. I've seen the magnets for certain powerheads. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I would suggest magnets instead. You can either buy some super strength epoxy-coated magnets online or use magnetic algae cleaners (do NOT use Hagen. Mag Float is my first choice). They also make some magnetic holders specifically for many pumps that would also be a good choice, but usually a more expensive one.

In any case, just to be cautious, watch any magnets carefully and make sure there is no corrosion. I have had several corrode in the past and the results can be very, very bad.

Depending on where and how deep some of that equipment is located in the tank, I've seen some cases where people made hang-on brackets out of clear acrylic, plexi-glass, or even egg crate and attached small equipment directly to them instead of relying on suction cups.
