I'm looking for suggestions for stocking my 16g (24" L x 12" W) tank. I would prefer to be understocked than push my novice skills with one that is fully stocked.

I have already promised my 5yo pink zebra danios, before properly researching and discovering they are transgenic. I would like at least one other species with them, even if it is a solo fish.

My tank is light and airy with river pebble substrate in pinks, terracottas, browns and white, so I was thinking that something with a strong black colouration would look quite striking.

What do you suggest and how many of each?

Welcome to AC! :)

If you are looking at Zebra Danios and wish for a slightly understocked tank, I would simply go with a school of Danios; say 6-8. That's a good size to consider for any schooling fish anyways.

After a while you can always reassess where things are at, but in a 16G a school of 8 Danios would be about it anyways. Some Cory Cats may be good, but things will get tight in a hurry, espeically since Corys like to be in groups as well.

Also, Danios can become nippy, so if you do consider a smaller school (5-6) and another fish try to avoid long fins as this will attract the Danios. 2 Black-Skirt Tetras may be what you are looking for, for that contrast you spoke of. Just as an open-ended suggestion.

If your tank is 16" high, it is a 20G. I'm a newbie, but from what I have read, if you do frequent water changes, you have room for plenty with 6 zebra danios. They are very small. Platies are very calm and colorful, in contrast to the danios.

Some 15 gallons are 16" high as well, 8 danios and some shrimp....

And 20" long and 12" wide?

6 danios and maybe 3 panda cories??

To be pedantic, the tank is 63 litres which is 16.6 gallons. How does a question about fish compatibility turn into a debate about tank size?
