. My betta lived in a 2.5 for nearly 3 years, but I wonder if he would have lasted longer with a heater :(
I've been told that 3 years is very good for a betta under any conditions, Paula(did I guess right?). My 2.5 doesn't have a heater, but stays at 78-80 year round.

I too would reccomend least killies(heterandria formosa) for a tank of that size. You could easily put ten in a tank that size and they don't require a heater. You would probably have to replace your current filter with an air powered sponge filter or an undergravel filter, as the males are so small that they easily get sucked into other filters. You probably would have to order these guys online or get your LFS to special order because they aren't too common. Trickster recommends www.aquaculturestore.com for these guys. It is only 16.95 for ten of them with free shipping, which seems reasonable to me.

Check out this tiny heater, designed for tanks 5 gallons or less.

I have one of those heaters on the 5 gallon eclipse in my office. I had to pull it because it doesn't regulate the temp..just provides a certain amount of heat...and it about cooked things this past winter with the way they heat our office building. I'm looking at getting a little pre-set tetra heater from Wal-mart that has a thermostat preset at 78. I hope that will do the trick.
